MUSTAFA DEMIR
He was born in Dicle in 1959. He started his university education at the Faculty of Dentistry of İstanbul University in 1979 and graduated in 1983. He completed the postgraduate program of Urban Studies and Management at the Architecture Department of the Science Institute of Sabahattin Zaim University.He is still continuing his second doctorate program at the Social Sciences Institute of Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University in the area of Political Science and International Affairs. In 2013, he was deemed worthy of ‘Honorary PhD’ in the Faculty of Communication, Department of Interpersonal Communication, by the Senate of Istanbul University.
In 2001, he became a member of the Board of Directors of İstanbul Provincial Office of Justice and Development Party; then in 2003, became Justice and Development Party’s Provincial Vice President responsible for the Public Relations, Promotion and Media of İstanbul and after he was elected as the Mayor of the Municipality of Fatih in the local elections of 2004. When Fatih covered the entire Historical Peninsula upon being united with Eminönü, he was elected the Mayor of Fatih Municipality in 2009 local elections. He was nominated again in 2014 Local Elections and elected as the Mayor of Fatih for the 3rd time.
Moreover, he also served as the President of the Haliç Municipalities Union for a certain period of time. Setting off with the dream of a “continuously livable Fatih” on the first day he took office, Mustafa Demir carried the understanding of municipal services into a different dimension with the ideal of creating a city that contributes to people’s identities and personalities.
Realizing sample projects such as urban renovation, education, informatics, restoration of the historical places, and social municipality for the first time, Demir continues to generate a “Brand Smart City”.Lecturing at various domestic and foreign universities in the fields of municipal corporations, public relations, urban information systems, urban regeneration, and restoration, Demir also shares his knowledge as well as the experiences he gained during his 17 years of political life with the youngsters at AKP’s (Justice and Development Party) Youth Section. Between the years 2013 and 2016, Mayor Demir was deemed worthy of membership to UCLG-MEWA and the Council and Executive Board of the Congress of United Cities and Municipal Corporations Organization of the Middle East and Western Asia.
